Shearing for 2010 is
complete. Along with shearing of all the sheep and
Melody, the guard llama, we took the opportunity to
trim a few hooves, give an oral drench for worms
and a vaccination booster, and replace any missing
ear tags. All these activities, along with a very
busy skirting table, provided plenty of jobs for
friends, family, and neighbors who came to help.
Shearing provides a chance for folks to have
hands-on real experience in this vital part of our
business. The day is more of a social occasion for
many and, as opposed to some processes in an animal
based farm, is totally non-threatening and positive
to the layperson. We try to organize the day and
the duties so everyone is involved and understands
the entire process. No task is unimportant. It’s a
great way to promote our business, invite the
community to be part of it, and a fun way to get
the job done. And the job got done! We have many
bags of great fleece that are now ready for washing
and carding.
